If you want a high performance culture, you cannot create an environment where subpar performance gets hidden. You need to see where you’re not winning, not cover it up. When A players use their extra bandwidth to compensate for the people next to them, you’re not getting the best out of them. You’re wasting their ability to create outsized results. You’re effectively demoting them to B players by surrounding them with people they have to look after. Don’t do it. If someone isn’t performing, let that be visible. Let it show up. Because here’s the thing: B players can become A players. They can elevate. They can train improve ask for coaching They can look at the A player next to them and say, how are you getting so much done? Teach me. That path only exists if the gap is visible. But if A players are constantly compensating, you drag down the average. Talent density drops. Performance drops. And eventually, your A players leave Because they’re not going to keep playing a game that’s rigged against them.
